Hi everyone! I am going to be a senior this August and I’m going to apply to UT College of Natural Sciences for the mathematical science major. I heard majors like business, computer science and engineering are all very competitive to get into at UT, so can anyone please tell me if mathematical science is a major that’s hard to get into at UT? Thank you so much!
Well, it may depend. Are you a Texas HS student? What is your class rank?
If you are in the top 7%- you will be an auto-admit BUT, that does not guarantee your major. That will depend more on course rigor in high school, test scores, and your essays.
Good Luck!
Thank you so much for your response! I am sadly not in auto admit but I’m really close. I heard auto admit for UT is 8% this year and my rank is at about 9%. I have an old sat score of 2030 with a 750 on the math section. I’ve taken 7 AP courses in the past 3 years and I’m taking 6 more for my senior year. I’m in various clubs and volunteered at many places. Do you think I have a chance based on my academics and everything else for the mathematical science major? Thank you again!
Auto admit for the class of 2020 (graduated in 2016) was top 8%. All further years announced this far are top 7%. That’s all I can comment on, but I wish you luck with your application!!
Here is a little more about it, in case you haven’t seen it. https://cns.utexas.edu/students/future/faqs#10-when-will-i-be-notified-of-my-admission
Being out of the auto admit range puts you at a disadvantage for admission. Not an impossiblility, but a disadvantage.
Do apply if you really want to attend. The worst they can say is no to regular admissions and offer you Pace and CAP.A friend of mine’s son wan’t admitted to Moody College of Communication so he did a CAP year at UT Arlington and transferred to UT his Sophomore year.
Apply to other schools as well and have a safety school, or two.
Also, read up on the costs of all the schools you apply to and compare them. Sometimes, there a big jump between tuition cost+meal plan+dorm per semester at different universities.
Good Luck.
