UT president supports limiting top 10% rule, warns of future crisis

Interesting article in the online version of the Austin American-Statesman.

UT president warns of consequences to automatic-admission law

Hope that link works.

I love that he plays the football card! LOL.

But I’d like to see the top 10% law amended.

I’m not a fan of the top 10% rule at all. I wish they would either limit it, drop it to less than 10%, or get rid of it all together.

If it is amended, many OOS students will be delighted. Maybe he mentioned athletics because he thinks that will boost the chance of getting the law amended?

I already called my state senator today. It’s getting totally out of hand. I’m glad my daughter got in last year.

Football! xD
How I despise the top 10% rule. :'(

I do not like the top 10% rule either. I know this one guy who got into McCombs from high school because he was in top 10% (not in top 3%). He said he failed the calculus 1 at UT. So he took it at ACC and got a C. He is in my Calculus 2 class at ACC and I don’t think he’s gonna pass Calculus 2. Oh and his overall GPA at UT is less than 3.0.
But my whole point is that we get this kind of people going to UT just because they got in with top 10%. That’s just one of many examples.

And i wasn’t in top 10% in high school so i didn’t get into UT but i am working my a… off at ACC and have a GPA of 3.55 and I will have all A’s this semester which will bump my GPA up to 3.66 and I would have all A’s on my business indicator classses. And even after all that I barley have shot at McCombs.

Your friend didn’t get into McCombs because of the top 10% rule. The rule guarantees admission to the university, not to a specific college or school. It looks like he just got lucky, because McCombs is highly competitive.

Ya, right, dropping football. They’ll drop some other students and save room for the football team. He’s just using a scare tactic to get his point across. They might drop water polo or underwater basket weaving, never football.

DP

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that the sacred CASH cow that is UT football isn’t going anywhere.

The revenue derived from football is IMMENSE, from licensing fees, to shared bowl revenue, to ticket sales, vending, etc.

No, I think they’ll come up with something before the demise of the football program. haha

But, clever ploy on his part - maybe it will shake things up in the Texas House of Reps!!
