<p>scout59-it depends on the area and the type of rental unit. We live in an area with a large university. The houses and apartments in the area where the university is located tend to run in 11 month leases. Most beginning at the same time and ending at the same time.
We have a property management company that rents some units to students but it is not the bulk of our renters. Our units run on an initial 12 month lease and usually after that go month to month. We require 30 days notice on termination. In our case most of the advertised apartments are ready to move in or in about 2 weeks.</p>
<p>Thanks, mom60 - that’s just the type of information I’m looking for. D is in Chicago in an area with a LOT of off-campus rentals. At her freshman orientation last summer, a group of current sophomores - all of whom lived off-campus - were pretty blase about the whole issue (one kid found a place a week before classes started), but again: they’re college kids.</p>
