UVa Premed Guidance

I am an incoming first year and i'm going the premed route. I'm sure many of the incoming freshmen here are also going to be premed so i thought it would be nice to have some current uva students, uva premeds, and uva grads give us some info on how premed at uva is. i know there are premed advisers but i think its nice to hear from students who have gone through it.

Who are the best professors for chem, bio, physics, ochem, calc?
Should we take math 121 or 131, both of which are calculus
Anything else you'd like to tell us, maybe even tell us your schedule for your first/second year or what we should take first year.

a big thank you from all the entering premeds!

I looked up the profs for calc 121 on theCourseForum. Most were not listed. Is that because the course is taught by grad students??

The website says calc 131 is for people who intend to keep studying math, vs. people just taking one or two semesters of calc and/or stats.

If you have AP credit for the two intro chem classes, you don’t get credit for the labs. You can either take the labs separately, or you can take “accelerated” intro chemistry (and still keep your 6 chem AP credits). There is more discussion at the FAQ for 1st year students at the Chem dept website.

Accelerated intro chem is designed for science majors. It reportedly has a much smaller class size, but is more work.

Thanks charlieschm

Anyone else care to give advice?

This has been discussed a billion times. You might try searching for more details. Google
the 120 series is less intense and better for anyone not pursuing higher level math.
AP credit is not usually accepted for pre-meds by future med schools so you should be aware of that.
Calc is taught by (new) TAs, and the other classes usually only have 1 professor teaching. If there are 2, just check them out on thecourseforum. There’s not much else anyone can say about profs besides that.

I know this has been posted here but the ones posted here are showing completely different professors and some date back to 2005 and 2006.

Current students and students that have had it 1-3 years ago I think would be the best source instead of old threads.

Anyone else care to post?

That’s why I said to go on thecourseforum which is the best resource of UVA professor reviews

Maybe you can look into to taking APMA 1110 in the e-school and try to get credit for math 1310 from that (the descriptions look similar for APMA 1110 and math 1310). Mary Beck is a very good professor in APMA.

…you’re telling him to take eschool calc over easy calc (121)??? you’ve got to be kidding, eschool is much harder.

Honestly it was only hard if you didn’t do all the homework and read through notes/hw for the quizzes and tests. As the OP is an aspiring doctor I think it would only be beneficial to experience a challenging but very doable workload.

Hi all, I’m a graduating 4th year (Sunday, yeah!) and going to med. school, entering this upcoming fall. Actually, many schools will accept your AP credit if UVA does, so basically, if it is on your UVA transcript, then med. schools probably will accept. It varies from school to school, so need to check with the individual schools. Buy the MSAR (Medical School Adm. Requirement) book, very helpful.
As someone else mentioned though, labs are a HUGE problem and most med. schools will not accept high school lab work, so be careful.
Pre med at UVA is tough, but very good. Make an appt. with Susan Salko, who is the pre-med advisor for UVA and is VERY smart and accomplished. She is at the University Career Services office. Be prepared though, she calls it as she sees it, but is very accurate in her guidance and on your chances.
The Professors change with the semesters so it is hard to recommend professors. Throw me a few names and I can comment.
I took Calculus 131 and had a wonderful experience, my teacher was fantastic!

There is no such thing as a premed major at UVA. You must consider what your possible “real” major is going to be prior to going to med school. Some upper level classes (chem’s physics etc) have calc 131 series as a pre req. that the 121 does not satisfy.
