<p>For me, the real story here are the issues that are being dog fought over in most academic institutions in the country except for the fabulously endowed.</p>
<p>At UVA the happy story is that there is some “separation of powers” right now. At my institution the Board appointed a prez in line with radical measure “lock, stock and barrel.”
Faculty protests fall on deaf ears, and disgruntled faculty are potential lines that can be cut and not replaced.</p>
<p>And the corporate model is reproducing corporate conditions: a abundance of higher paid administration at the top with a shrinking faculty. Sadly this is happening in public secondary education as well.</p>
<p>As they used to say on Dragnet, “There are a million stories in the big city.” This is one fight that became very public. A little investigation would uncover similar, if less dramatic, scenarios in many other institutions.</p>
