Hello! I'm applying to the CAS, so I have to write an essay about "What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?"

I was thinking about doing the song "What a Wonderful World," and how the song gave me a new perspective in a time of personal depression.

Does this sound like it would be a good topic? I don't know if something like this would be overdone. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I wrote a very rough draft of this essay. Is anyone willing to read it?

Anyone? I’m not really much help. It’s a great pop song but you are probably not reaching the depth of intellectual struggle/inspiration they are hinting for. To be honest I think talking about your depression is not really going to help you in your college app. Every teen has angst and I would bet they are pretty sick of the self indulgence. I would possibly write about how the song is about 50 years old and consider how your interpretation of it differs or complies with that of the past three generations. It was written in 1967 as an antidote to the anti-war, ban the bomb. assassination rife atmosphere of the 1960’s. TBH, I always thought he was saying “dogs say goodnight…”
Good luck.

I would be happy to read it for you.
