UVA vs. WUSTL Pre-Med

Hey,

I am a senior finishing out high school and I'm not sure whether I should go to UVA or WUSTL next year.

I live in Virginia, so UVA would end up being about $140,000 cheaper, but my parents can and will pay for WUSTL if they think it will help my chances as med school student/resident somwhere down the road.

Both schools are a good fit for me. A lot of my friends are already at/going to UVA and I know it pretty well. On the other hand, WUSTL offers clinical experience and more research research opportunities than UVA, and I'm tempted to get out of Virginia and see what's out there.

What would you guys do?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

both are excellant schools but i think you should go to uva because you could the money for med school.

This to me is the important sentence, especially the last part. Going away from home for college can be really important, and the geographic diversity you get matters a lot.

I vote for WUSTL.

Thanks for the advice guys.

bluedevilmike, I read some pre-med threads before starting my own and noticed that you seem pretty knowledgable about the whole process; I really value your advice. On a purely academic and extracurricular basis, do you think WUSTL pre-med is superior enough to UVA to justify the price tag?

Unfortunately, I don't have enough information. I don't know much about the UVa and WUSTL undergraduate programs -- I have some classmates from each and they're all top-notch -- or your family's financial situation to make this call for you.

I just happen to think that it already sounds like you really want to have a new experience for college, and I think that that's valid and worthwhile.

Thanks for the honesty bluedevilmike.

I wish sakky or somebody would post with mind-boggling statistics on grade inflation or med school placement that would answer that question.

Neither of those by themselves would tell you what you need to know. Besides, even sakky doesn't know how much that money means to your family.
