I have to register my preferences for a University Writing Seminar soon and I was wondering what people’s experiences have been with different courses. Also, recommendations to good ones and warnings about ones to stay away from would be helpful! :)

I just looked up next year’s UWS offerings and I’m not familiar with most of them (the offerings change from year to year, as do the instructors; UWS is probably the only class you will ever take that is taught by a graduate student instead of a professor). Most people end up hating UWS because it’s a lot of work and the writing styles taught are very meticulous. With that in mind, I would suggest reading over the course descriptions and signing up for ones that sound interesting to you. If you have to suffer through this class, why not take something where you will enjoy the readings?

Another consideration is your class schedule. Look at the other courses being offered fall and spring semesters and try to get an idea of your schedule. UWS is a writing-intensive class, so if you already know you want to take an English class (for example) spring semester, then you might want to take UWS in the fall.

If you narrow it down to a few and still can’t decide on a first choice, second choice, etc., feel free to PM me and I’ll see if I can dig up information about the instructors. You can also do some of that yourself here: https://sys.brandeis.edu/ceg/index

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice!
