Does anyone here know much about UW’s honors program, for example, do they offer lots of honors classes or only a few? Are these math and science classes? Are they taught by professors or TAs?
Also, does anyone know if UW has a good premed program, especially in the honors college, and what their acceptance record is for med school at both UW and other top colleges?
The UW’s Honors program is interdisciplinary, so it basically means the student has to do the core curriculum/general education requirements in Honors. They are designed to be smaller, discussion-based classes all taught by professors. Definitely added benefits of being part of this smaller community in the huge place that is UW. Students can take honors math and science courses in the program, but they will also have to do honors across other disciplines as well as a thesis type project.
Pre-med wise, I used to be a med school recruiter and know that a lot of graduate programs look to UW for students. However, the school is just so large and they don’t have a centralized or organized pre-med program that tracks outcomes. I tried for years to find statistics that most other schools present regarding med school acceptance rates, where students go to med school, etc. and they simply don’t track this information. There are only a few pre-health advisors for the entire university (thousands and thousands of students are pre-med), but students can major in anything and go to med school, so it gets a little complicated.
Thanks Advising123. Very helpful info.
Does the honors college start in Freshman year? How do you become eligible? Do you have to maintain a certain GPA to stay in it? Also, do these honors classes demand more out of students, i.e. do they have to do more work than students in regular classes for the same grade?
Do you know if the UW has a strong neuroscience discipline?
The Honors Program website has answers to your questions and a lot of other information: http://depts.washington.edu/uwhonors/
UW has a neurobiology major that is competitive for admission: http://depts.washington.edu/nbio/
Its graduate program is in the top 25 in the world, according to this publication: http://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/neuroscience-behavior
Good luck!
Great links! Thanks UWfromCA!
