Hey everyone. I will be vacationing abroad this summer for all of July. I am a freshman entering college, probably majoring in computer science. What books/resources can I take with me to learn as Computer Science and Math as I can without internet access? I need stuff that would be rather easy to follow, and if it includes problem sets, has solutions (pretty please!). I just want to be super prepared as I enter college.
Last vacation I took, the hotel had wifi and practically ever restaurant/cafe I sat in had free wifi.
@GMTplus7 I will be going to rural areas in a country with much slower internet speeds on average than the United States. Unfortunately my access to the internet will be very limited.
To be honest, I think you should just relax and enjoy your vacation. Take the time to recharge.
@baktrax I will recharge- it is just that I will have a lot of downtime, so I figured that I should learn as much as I can. This will be the most laid back summer for me since middle school.
LOL @yikesyikesyikes, welcome to my life! For us, leaving the city equals leaving internet. You’re very lucky. Enjoy the experience of living the way human beings always lived until a decade or so ago. And c’mon, it’s not the time for computer science and math anyway. You’ve had that in high school, you’ll have it every day in college. Learn about the world. Bring a good book for down time
I lived in rural Wyoming for months, where Internet speeds were slower than dial up, if you could connect at all. IF you want to learn programming download a bunch of lectures from iTunes U on relevant subjects. Then download free textbooks with practice problems and solutions as well as a compiler that can work off line.
However, I’m going to echo the other posters and tell you to calm down and enjoy the vacation. This may be your last summer where you don’t have to work or take classes. Your professors will not expect that you spent the summer studying, nor will your peers.
If you really want to learn, buy some books about the area you’ll be living in.
If you want to travel light, bring a Kindle.
just a thought… if you have any English breadth requirements or similar, maybe you could find out the reading list and work on reading those books. It would free up some of your time in the fall for hw in your cs classes.
