I was recently accepted into quite a few schools which have varying personalities

Two of these schools include Bates College and Vanderbilt University

Although Vanderbilt may be a bit more prestigious and gave me 26Km (whereas Bates gave me 8K), I really need an intellectual atmosphere

I was wondering if anyone could juxtapose the two based on this concern, and if any could describe the atmophere at Vanderbilt and Bates more in depth

But Vandy has small classroom sizes which I like because you make a lot of friends and learn the material better. The professors are extremely helpful and give you their home numbers.

Hi,
I am currently a Vanderbilt student. You said you need an intellectual atmosphere; well Vandy does have that but you must search beyond the Greeks. A large part of the social scene here at Vandy revolves around the Frats. To be honest with you in the beginning I didn't like Vandy simply because I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of ignorant rich kids who got here on mommy and daddy's dime...and yes do not get me wrong there is some of that. It takes some time to find people who care more about their studies than the foam party at the frat, but once you do it is all worth it. There are many VERY intelligent kids at Vanderbilt but they are simply not as visible because we are always in our rooms studying and not out drinking. My classes and professors have been amazing and I cannot imagine being anywhere else. I have made wonderful friends and had throught provoking conversations with kids from across the nation. If you do end up coming to Vandy and you want a group of bright kids to associate with, search for the kids who are here on merit based scholarships.

I have no knowledge of the other school to be able to offer you any adivice on it. Feel free to message me to ask any questions you might have. Good Luck!

Yeah that last post really helped. I'm one of those kids who got in on merit with about 1/2 tuition payed and I'm looking to Vanderbilt for that. If I can avoid the someone pathetic social scene at Vanderbilt and survive 4 years without a frat, I think it will be a risk worth taking because of the opportunities and yes, the name. I've made my decision to attend the school after hearing so many great opinions on it despite its stigmas.

But if anyone has any additional opinions, please feel free to post.
