My uncle did his engineering PhD at Stanford and had similarly glowing reviews of the grad school. Interestingly, he was less enthusiastic about undergrad (which he obviously had contact with as a doctoral candidate) there. He recommended that if my son wanted to be a practicing engineer, he’d be better served by going elsewhere.
There’s no way on God’s green Earth that Stanford is worth $300K when the alternative is Vandy for free. Not even debatable.
Look at it this way…in 10-20 years NO ONE really cares where you got your undergrad.
(Ok, maybe if you are living in the ultra rich name dropping society )
Save the money. Use it for your other kids.
Even without the full ride scholarship award many would have difficulty deciding between Stanford & Vanderbilt.
Agree on the shift away from Greek life. I rarely post about Vandy these days because my double 'Dore D works there, but we have had the discussion about the shift away from Greek life several times since she graduated. S was also a double 'Dore and was not Greek. No regrets from him on that choice. Both have stayed close to their undergrad friends through the years and S married his girlfriend from law school. It worked out well for both of them and the school continues to rise in prestige since S first enrolled in 2002. This decision seems obvious based on the price tag alone to me. Congratulations to your daughter on being awarded the Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship!
Even thought it’s not the same kind of comparison, my S19 ended up choosing Vanderbilt over Brown and has been very happy with his decision. He has found a lot of outdoor activities and explored nearby lakes and state parks. Many students have left the Greek system or avoided it altogether at Vanderbilt. While my S is in a fraternity, this year he has spent much more time with his business fraternity (which includes women and men) and has developed some great friendships through that organization. Nashville is also super fun!
