Vanderbilt or Johns Hopkins?

Hello,

I was recently accepted off of the waitlist of both Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins. Both are offering me similar amounts of financial aid. I am simply not sure what could tip the scale towards either school!
Johns Hopkins is only about 45 minutes away from where I live, Nashville is about 10 hours. The problem is that I prefer Nashville as a city over Baltimore, but I’m not sure if I like it enough to overcome the 9 hour 15 minute difference in location.
Does anyone else have any input that could help me with my decision? Thank you.

By the way, I am a mathematics major

Well, what matters most to you in a school? What are your preferences?

9hrs in a big deal driving, but it’s really no big deal flying. That’s about an hour and a half flying. Maybe even less!

I’d choose Johns Hopkins. However they’re both great options.

Consider also the rankings of each in math, and I guess the sense of community/environment for the school. For example, I don’t know much about JHU but Vandy’s social scene features prominent Greek life, so if that isn’t something you’re looking for then it’s something to consider when weighing the options.

In my personal observation, Vanderbilt kids are a little smarter but Johns Hopkins kids are a lot harder working.

Personally, I prefer the Vandy kids.

As for Baltimore, there’s a saying at Hopkins: The town is like a fungus. It grows on you. You may not want it to, but it grows on you.

Well, I’m really against drinking and partying… I know that Johns Hopkins is generally more serious and there are less parties, which is a plus.

Thank you guys!

Sounds like, other than the Nashville factor, you prefer Hopkins. I would go with Hopkins if I were you.

It’s college. There are always gonna be parties. Both schools are diverse enough so you don’t have to do that if you want, but if you do decide to (because let’s face it, pretty much all college kids eventually do), you’ll find it at both schools. Right now, we would be speaking from what we prefer. What do YOU prefer in a school aside from a tame party scene?

I would go to Vanderbilt. Good sports, great academics, awesome party town and great food.

It sounds to me like Hopkins would be a better fit for you.

I would look more into the campus feel as well and the attitudes of the students. Hopkins while the student body is more reserved than that at Vanderbilt when it comes to parties and drinking, it also has a reputation for being extremely cut-throat when it comes to competition between students. Vanderbilt on the other hand, has a very green and beautiful campus planted in the middle of urban Nashville and the students there tend to be extremely helpful, friendly, and collaborative when it comes to academics. Are you looking for a competitive environment or one of more group collaboration because eachthat is the main difference I see between the options here.

Speaking just personally on the basis of academics, I would choose Hopkins. But both are great schools.

I appreciate all of your opinions! I ended up picking Johns Hopkins, mainly because of the fact that it is only about an hour from where I live currently. Again, I really appreciate you guys taking the time to answer.
