Take it from one who knows, Vandy is a lot less conservative than you might think. We have our fair share of southern fried christianity (it is Nashville) but a large part of the student body comes from elsewhere. Also ditto to MOMofWildChild, Nashville beats ATL any day. It's a great place to live and the traffic isn't hell on earth. Also, the social scene at Vandy is awesome. There's a definite work hard play hard mentality.

Interesting discussion going on here...I am a soon to be graduate student and i am considering moving to Nashville but I had some questions about the Vanderbilt area. I saw earlier in this thread that the undergraduates live on campus their entire time in college (blows my mind). Does that make off campus housing in the vicinity of Vanderbilt cheaper? nicer? What sort of population lives around the school- faculty, grad students, staff, people unaffiliated with the university? Does this mean that the off campus areas lack vibrancy normally seen in these type of areas? Any other input would also be greatly appreciated.

Lol at the thought of considering the word "cheaper" and vanderbilt in the same paragraph. Most of the off-campus housing at Vandy is VERY NICE but none if it is cheap. It is quite pricey, well I guess that is relative to where you are coming from and what you are expecting but I'd say an average rent for a 2/2 bedroom/bath is prob around $1600 a month without utilities. There are some nice areas of Nashville a bit away from campus and nice for a grad student. The places in the direct vicinity of campus tend to be some undergrads (there are ways to get off campus) and lots of grad/professional students, med students finishing their residency, etc. faculty in general from my experience does not live in the direct vicinity of campus, but there are lots of professional nashvillians that are young and choose to live in that area because there is lots going on and certain areas like hillsboro and the gulch are quite trendy. if u have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

which one is better if you're planning to apply to law school?

and even though diversity is an important factor, id say the social interations between the different kinds of people are just as important. ive read in the emory thread that there are a lot of cliques separating different ethnicities. is this true for vanderbilt?

Last year Emory was less selective atleast to my knowledge because my sister got rejected by Vanderbilt and accepted into Emory. Basically Vanderbilt has more school spirit from my knowledge.

newman that is one case. no conclusion can be drawn by your sister's case.

Vandy def has more school spirit.

race cliques definitely exist at Vanderbilt too. but I agree with what your saying, oranges. what good is diversity if the different races don't interact?
