Vandy ACT question

I'm mostly hearing 32-33ish is the line for admission to Vandy, and I'm just curious as to how Vandy would handle my problem.

See, I have a 31 ACT with writing and a 33 without. Retaking is really not an option, but I'm just curious to if they will accept the 33 or not, because I can't find anything anywhere on the subject.

My understanding is that they will look at everything you send but the ACT without the writing is not the number that counts on the statistics posted for ACT scores. Your 31 will be the number. While 32-33 fall at the 50% mark, the 31 is inside Vanderbilts 25% to 75% range (though at the low end). Meaning that 25% of the accepted student have a lower score. I don’t think a 31 is a big negative and it will be the quality of your total application that will ultimately determine if you get in. Best of Luck.

Yes, I’m pretty sure Vanderbilt only accepts ACTs with writing… sorry! But I wouldn’t worry too much about ACT scores - yes they’re important, no they’re not the most important thing. Worry more about teacher recommendations and your common app essay.

Send BOTH scores.

Here’s what the Vanderbilt admissions website says:

I agree with momof2ky - send both scores. A 31 is still an impressive score. Just wondering - was the score with writing lower because of the writing, or was it just a less-fortunate testing day overall? If you spend a lot of time and effort on your essays, you can put the adcom’s mind at rest about the writing score. Good luck!

Send both scores. I’m fairly sure they will just look at your writing score on the 31 and use your 33 as your main ACT composite score. If you want to be completely sure, call their undergraduate office of admission (which you can find on their website) and ask a representative. Calling the institution is, by far, the best way to ask questions like these and receive an accurate answer.

I agree with LBlock. I am pretty certain that they will take your highest composite score and then take the writing score from your other test. I have a D there right now and a S who will be applying for the fall. I am pretty sure that’s what they did when she applied because her situation was almost identical to yours.

Do you think they will superscore the ACT this year?

They won’t. Admissions officer said so during info session.

send both scores and trust them to judge them fairly…seriously…don’t hesitate. Our son had a very high ACT without writing that trumped his SAT, but his SAT writing score was very high. He just sent them all in…and let them figure it out. (BTW…not taking the writing section on the ACT was not his brightest decision but we just didn’t have any good advice in his HS where you seldom see the overwhelmed GC staff)…no one takes the ACT round here and he didn’t even factor in that his ACT might be much stronger than his SAT all round.

If you don’t send in both, I’ll personaly steal your 33

I agree that you should send both, but I would not sweat it at all. They will see you are capable of a 33, and that is all that matters. Hell, I wouldn’t even give the 31 a thought if the rest of your application is strong. I’ve seen scores that were worse (including my own, mind you), that got in just fine.
