<p>Im an upcoming senior who is in the middle of his college search. I live in the Northeast, so I am wondering whether Vanderbilt is recognized only in the South, or if it is recognized nationally.</p>
<p>For instance two of the other schools I am looking at are Notre Dame and Villanova. I know that ND is nationally recognized. & I know that Villanova is really only recognized in the Northeast. How well is Vanderbilt recognized if I were to apply for a job in the Northeast with a degree from Vandy?</p>
<p>ND is recognized primarily because of its long sports traditions i think. On kinda the same note...the guys on ESPN yesterday mentioned vanderbilt. haha
i think it is better known in the south but also known nationally...at least by the intellectual/educated community</p>
<p>It may not be as nationally recognized as it would like to be, but it jumped more than 50 spots last year on the World rankings so they must be doing something right.</p>
<p>Vanderbilt's reputation is definitely on the rise nationally. In the South it already has an amazing reputation. When I went down to Nashville to visit, and decided to attend, I was talking to some guy from Atlanta that was staying in the same hotel as me. When I told him I was going to Vanderbilt, he practically flipped out. He was like rigorously shaking my hand and saying how amazing it was. </p>
<p>This would never happen anywhere in the Northeast. However, has someone said, the educated/intellectual community respects Vanderbilt. Some people even in the Northeast, such as my math teacher and middle school teacher, appreciate Vanderbilt, but not enough people actually do, unfortunately.</p>
<p>Vanderbilt is THE Southern prestige school. Duke is understood to be an East Coast school. It's also obviously nationally recognized as a Top 20 Uni by academics, employers, and grad schools.</p>
<p>I think that grad/professional schools absolutely recognize Vanderbilt as a top university. I imagine that top national companies would, as well. What are your plans for after graduation? If you're looking at law or med school, or an advanced degree, I think having your BA from Vanderbilt will give you a definite boost. If you plan to return to an area like the one I live in, where few people go to school out of state, and few people move in from out of state, the Vanderbilt name would not mean as much. Which reflects poorly on my area, not Vanderbilt. :)</p>
<p>villanova doesn't hold a candle to vanderbilt's prestige, if that's what you're looking for. vandy has everything, and graduate schools that are either in the top ten or just below it. if we are a top 50 university in the world according to multiple sources, then i'm certain most international companies know about us. also, that should be true considering i know quite a few people who got jobs overseas</p>

1. notre dame
2. (close 2nd) vandy</p>
<p>(to represent distant 3rd)
3. nova</p>
<p>if it matters to you, i'm also from the northeast and that's my take on it. a lot of ND's schools are not as highly regarded as Vandy's though (i.e. their law school). but ND football is ND football... so, yeah.</p>
<p>Huge thing to consider in a ND vs. Vandy discussion is location. 2 completely different worlds. If you're from the Northeast Northeast (as in NY, Boston, as opposed to say Maryland), South Bend, IN is a world of difference compared to big cities. Nashville is different as well, but is still a major US city.</p>
