Hey so I am an international student who might move to NY and i’m probably going to a prep school.
Is it possible for me to join any Junior Varsity/ Varsity teams in the 11th grade?
I played basketball until a year ago and I was pretty good!
What about a sport I’ve never played before?

Most schools will have tryouts before the season starts, so if you are good enough, you can play. It is unlikely that you would be good enough in a sport you have never played. With that said, sometimes, particularly at a smaller school or with a sport like XC, track, or swimming, anyone can be on JV. It allows people to develop their ability through practice. At DS’ school, for example, JV lacrosse took everyone who didn’t make varsity and the coach was an excellent teacher. Quite a few players who had never played spent a couple years on JV then played varsity. But this was not the case in soccer or basketball where JV had cuts. It will depend on the school.
Depends entirely on the school. Some schools enroll post-grad (PG) students which fill up varsity slots quickly. Others have a more laid back attitude. Like others said, if you’ve never played a sport before, its unlikely you will make varsity. But its worth to tryout.
