My DD did not get the email (as far as I know.) She is keeping all of this pretty private! She has been accepted at Centre College, Macalester, and Grinnell. Rejected at Bowdoin, which was an ouch because her brother graduated from there in 2017 and her grades/test scores/ECs are better than his were! Oh, well. She’s a girl from MA - doesn’t get much worse demographically! Waiting on Vassar, Wesleyan, Smith, and Lafayette. Got great merit aid from Centre ($25K), and ok from Mac and Grinnell ($16K/year). Still makes attending pretty expensive!!!
My daughter was accepted to both Hopkins and Vassar. She got tons of $$ from Hopkins and they even sweetened the deal when presented with Vassar’s offer. My daughter chose Vassar because VC is a LOC (not a uni), JHU is sports-oriented with fraternities, JHU is in Baltimore and housing in NOT offered on campus after 2nd year (alarming number of assaults and murders near campus), and Vassar’s reputation for English/writing/literature far outshines Hopkin’s reputation as a STEM school. Long story short-- she graduated Vassar Phi Beta Kappa, got full funding for 7 years PhD program in English literature, and last month sat in on grad school admissions committee meeting where decision makers specifically said JHU was okay for creative writing (but mediocre for literature/criticism). Good luck!
Also, a BIG part of Vassar v Hopkins decisions – practically no core requirements at Vassar, while Hopkins mandates 27 of 120 credits for distribution requirements. Yep --Vassar requires just TWO courses: one freshman writing course and one quantitative course (math, psych stats, science, etc). So, she was looking at taking 1/4 of her courses for distribution reasons vs just 2 courses. Vassar gave her the freedom to learn what SHE wanted, not take what Hopkins required her to take. She loved it!
Thank you for your reply, but can we please stop making comparative comments about schools before the decision is being made? I haven’t visited either, and am still waiting on results for several schools, including Vassar. If my decision comes down to Hopkins vs. Vassar, I will definitely take your comments into consideration, but there are a lot of factors that I will need to take into account in a few weeks; I am trying not to prematurely cloud my judgment. @HSHelper1
@writergirl0316 I disagree wholeheartedly. The purpose of this forum is to share information with potential college attendees. I really appreciate the comments of @HSHelper1 and would love if you wouldn’t put parameters on the forum because it bothers your sensibilities.
I mean… this is a Vassar forum, not Vassar vs. Hopkins. There are tons of College X vs College Y threads. Here’s an example http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/554392-johns-hopkins-or-vassar.html. I didn’t mention Hopkins in my original comment because I wanted to keep this thread focused on Vassar alone and only responded when someone else brought it up, which I regret doing. You can talk about why you chose Vassar without talking about why you ~didn’t~ choose another school, and I don’t want my reply to be the reason this thread goes off track. Again, I said I appreciate the comments but the whole website is for college attendees; this particular thread is for “Vassar Class of 2022 Regular Decision.” Can’t we just focus on the 27th? @optimistic43
i agree. many kids will soon find out that vassar has rejected them and hopkins may be in some cases a go. this is not a thread for why vassar. good luck to the vassar rd candidates.
Absolutely! That is the beauty of these threds. Sharing information for others - processing personal decisions- rambling on about nerves. Some folks may be attracted to the description of Hopkins above. I have never been on a thred where someone has reprimanded someone for providing information because it wasn’t helpful to them specifically.
I’m super hopeful Vassar is an option for D. It has always been in her top 3, and I personally think it’s a perfect fit. It’s a reach because her ADHD GPA is a little under, but her test scores, essay etc. were stellar. It will come down to whether they can see the person beyond the number and the talent that is there - in competitive schools like this, it’s hard to know how holistic their approach is to decision making. The waiting is haaaaaard. 4 more days. Again, good luck everybody. Pretty soon you’ll be falling in love with whatever choice you make or option you have.
The wait is actually killing me!! I see a lot of people commenting that this is their dream school, and I just wanted to say good luck to everyone that is applying!!. hopefully, we will all see each other in the fall at Vassar
Did anyone else not get the email about the decision date? My son definitely did not get any email and his portal just says that he will be notified closer to the decision date about how to check for his status. Should we just assume that this was an oversight and his decision will be in his portal on Tuesday? Or are some applicants getting decisions later?
@momof2boys65 I’m certain it was a mass email, and your son’s probably is bouncing around stuck in a server somewhere. His decision should be up on Tuesday.
@momof2boys65 Did you check your son’s spam folder? Given that this was a mass email his email software may have flagged it as spam.
Maybe that is where it is. I told him tp check. He keeps his email private so I don’t log in.
I may be wrong, but I think it could be a bad sign. For example, I did not receive a decision date email from Wesleyan and also did not get in. However, I did receive one from Smith (where I did get in). Now I am wondering if a decision date email indicates acceptance…
It could be true but I really wouldn’t put too much stock into it. My guess would be it’s just a very big coincidence
@writergirl0316 First of all your comment “this whole website if for college attendees” is simply not accurate. It is for parents, former students, future students and professionals such as consultants and teachers. That aside, you are not the CC police nor the “conversation director”; that is what the Mods are for. There were some substantive comparisons of two schools by someone with a wealth of information based on experience. Those sharing of ideas and experiences, not just for 2022, but for future classes are often priceless bits of information. So, really, it’s not about you.
FOUND THE EMAiL!!! It was dated March 20th and was in his Gmail Promotions folder so never was seen or read! All the conspiracy theories can be put to rest LOL! I have to admit it did make me paranoid.
i did not receive a decision date from haverford (i dont think anyone did), washington and lee, and williams (people received these) and i got in
i honestly prefer waking up to an unexpected decision
