Vassar Early Decision?

I just visited Vassar this past weekend and I absolutely love it. My stats aren't that great but if you could chance me for ED at Vassar and RD for a few other schools, I would appreciate it.

I'm a white male from a very competitive public school in Illinois that was ranked in the top 1% nationally

3.61 UW GPA, 30 ACT (8 essay), taking SAT Subject tests next weekend- math ii and english literature

my class rank puts me in the top 22% currently... 106/478 (this is the part that concerns me because Vassar's class of 2012 had 90-something percent in the top 20%)

I got a 4 on AP Calc AB test and will have taken 5 APs and several other honors classes by graduation.

The school I attended for 9th and 10th grade offered no APs or honors, but my senior year at my current school is pretty rigorous: AP English, AP Stats, AP Psych, AP Government, Honors International Relations, and Philosophy

My teacher recs will be glowing, and my counselor explained why I couldn't take honors classes my first two years in high school in her rec.

As for extracurriculars, I'm not very involved... I was the co-president/co-founder of a gardening club at my old school, I played varsity soccer for two years, intramural ultimate frisbee for two years, went on Outward Bound sailing trips, had a two month long hiking/camping trip, and I volunteered for about 30 hrs/month last year as a tutor for elementary school students.

Other schools I'm considering:
Wesleyan, Skidmore, Brown, Oberlin, NYU, George Washington, U of Wisconsin at Madison

Please chance me? Thanks

Anyone have any thoughts? If Vassar ED is too selective for me, does anyone have any other recommendations for me? I'd love your insights. Thank you.

i think you're right smack in the middle of Vassar students. Not the most stellar stats, but nothing too shabby. you should have a decent chance! i considered vassar for a while, and i learned that most of the students had vassar as their second choice and only went there because they didn't get into their number 1 school. that kind of turned me off... so did the unkempt buildings. but i hope you get in and enjoy it!

rhov, thanks for your response... you don't think my gpa and class rank are too low? And it's funny how you mention that Vassar is often a #2 school. I think Brown is actually my favorite school, but I can't get in... I still really like Vassar though. Did you feel like a lot of Vassar students were bitter about their rejections from other schools?

your stats are a little low, but i think you will fall at the lower end of vassar's range. if you have a good essay and good recommendations, that will help a lot. i didn't have much chance to talk with vassar students, but the ones i did talk too seemed very happy there. vassar has 2 early decisions so if you don't get into your number 1 on ED, then you can do vassar's ED 2. so you could try for brown if you write an amazing essay...

yeah def. have good essays and work your butt off to get into top20% so if you are deferred, you will have that going for you. I live right near Poughkeepsie. A lot of ppl that go to Vassar complain about Poughkeepsie, I have no idea why! I love it! Beautiful area, things to do, and New Paltz is a blast, and its right across the river. Vassar is the academic crown of the Hudson Valley , good luck!

if brown is actually your favorite school, why not apply there ED? vassar will always be there in the RD round
