Hey,
so I got into both schools, and I am not quite sure what to do now. I was not expecting to get into both.
The thing is, I am from central america, and diversity is very important for me, at least having variety in the student body would do. I love discussions about politics and current fairs, for econ and poli sci are my intended major.
My worry, is that if I attend Vassar I wont really fit in, I love art , but I would not call myself an artsy type as everyone labels vassar students.
Other than that, I have never been in a small town like Middletown or Poughkeepsie (although I did do college credit at Yale for two months, new haven was very small).
So, could anyone give me some advice or your opinions about my situation

Knowing both well (and being a Vassar econ major), I can say that Vassar is well-known for both its econ and poli sci programs, with both being stronger than Wesleyan’s respective programs. I can also say with certainty that the artsy stereotype of Vassar students is NOT true. We are no different than the average liberal arts college in that respect, although they may be more welcomed. I only know a few such people, and they do not by any means dominate the campus. A final note, diversity on campus is barely an issue. I sizable chunk of my friends are international (~20%) and they all feel extremely welcome here. I have a couple friends from Latin America and both love it here. I would recommend taking some of the high level Spanish department courses on history/literature, I’ve heard they’re excellent.
Good luck with your decision, feel free to message me with any questions/fb requests/anything

Ok…so everyone knows that Vassar and Wesleyan are extremely similar schools and the choice between them can be difficult. However, first off, congratulations on getting into 2 amazing schools. Wherever you go, I am sure you will be very happy and successful. Here is my 2 cents.

Econ/Poli Sci: These are 2 of our most popular majors. I am a poli sci major and I can tell you very confidently that it is one of the best departments here at vassar, with history probably being just slightly stronger. Nearly all of the poli sci professors are AMAZING and the course selection is extremely diverse, unlike traditional, more conservative poli sci programs at other schools. I cant say much about econ because i have never taken econ, but check out the course catalogue. also, while some of the student body can be apathetic, you can definitely have great discussions about current events, so don’t worry about that. all poli sci classes are discussion based, so you will surely have amazing talks in these classes.

Environment: i love art too, but am not that artsy. i would say this describes most of the VC student body. if you don’t do drama or play an instrument or draw, you will definitely fit in here, there are tons of people who have non-arts interests. i think vassar is great because we can enjoy all of the arts offerings, even if we dont participate in them ourselves. trust me, you do not have to be super artsy to fit in here.

both poughkeepsie and middletown are small cities. poughkeepsie is bigger but middletown may be slightly nicer. however, poughkeepsie is much closer and accessible to NYC. so if you want a break from campus, you can easily take the train down to NYC for the day and explore.

hope this helps!
