How likely is it for someone to get off the waitlist, and how can I make my chances of getting off the waitlist better?
Speaking generally, as I don’t know about the Vassar waitlist specifically, chances are not too great. Most colleges already over-accept based on their previous statistics since they know not everyone in the regular decision acceptance pool will actually attend. The spaces left from the difference between their projected attendance and actual attendance goes to those on the waitlist; however, the waitlist usually isn’t in any particular order, and it’s like a lottery - they pull at random.
Now, about making your chances better, there isn’t much you can do. You can attempt to talk to admissions if you desire, but I’m not sure it would help you.
Best of luck. I’m sorry you’re in this position, but I’m sure you’ll do wonderful no matter what college you choose to attend! (:
Admission officers make educated decisions whom to admit off the wait-list based on the makeup of those who have acknowledged they will matriculate. It could be the yield for men was to low, consequently, selected men will win the prize.
Oh, sorry! Didn’t mean to misinform.
Just in case you hadn’t seen this:

Fingers crossed for you. Good luck!!!
Has anyone heard news about getting in off the waitlist? Have they released decisions to anyone?
I was recently admitted via email by my regional admissions officer.
Congratulations!
My D was offered a spot via regional admissions officer, but she’s no longer interested and is sticking with Hamilton. But they are making some offers.
I heard there was a group of streakers during admitted student day at Hamilton. No wonder kids are opting to attend Hamilton.
@CrewDad Lol, this is true, we were indeed streaked. Gives new meaning to Hamilton’s colors of blue and buff.
@CrewDad, during the Hamilton Accepted Students Day streak, we overheard from some current students that the turnout was lighter than usual given the colder day that it was. Our twin DD’s who are both attending thought it was funny, but their 12-year old sister was horrified :((
For context on the varsity sport referenced above:
^^
ROTFL—“We streak for the little people” Bless their heart.
They do it for those who can’t, @Crewdad.
^^
@merc, I understand that. I simply found it very humorous that Biffy used a phrase on national TV that to most is extremely offensive.
Little people:
“What the rich call the working class. Used in a snobbish way, with their nose in the clouds.”
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=little%20people
For me, the expression’s usage simply fit the satirical – touching on the subversive – nature of the students’ appearance. Maybe I need an emoticon once in a while.
My D was admitted this afternoon off the waitlist.
@scoutyboy, congrats! I’m sure the other school will have no problem backfilling, so there will be two more winners this week! That said, it feels like this waitlist process has gotten out of control as I heard today that a school was offering extended waitlists for February 2018 admission - that’s crazy.
Update: Admitted off of the waitlist!!
