very bright student; unable to attend high school

Hello, I have a son who has tested very high and is academically gifted but is unable to attend high school due to depression and anxiety. He is also struggling with tutoring but we have discussed the possibility of a GED and attending community college. He has clear academic goals but cannot deal with the high school drama/immaturity. Any thoughts on the community college to university idea? Thank you.

Check out Laurel Springs online school. It is excellent, has all the AP courses and their grads (91%) get into their first choice universities including all the Ivies as well as the more selective non-Ivies. We are looking at it for our daughter. They also have a Gifted & Talented program.

The suggestion of online courses sounds just right for this student. If he struggles with both tutoring and high school interactions, community college doesn’t seem to be an appropriate next step. Working on his emotional and social progress should be high priorities. Until he can cope with classroom stresses, he is not ready for the social settings that community college would require.

And even college would involve classroom stress/drama to some extent.

I’m not a parent but sending a child with clinical depression on his own to college may not be wise. He’ll be exposed to a lot of diverse environments that may trigger anxiety.

Those online colleges suggested above sound great, though!

Good luck!
