Very complicated inquiry

So I graduated from a tech school last spring. I applied for a loan increase in the spring of 2018 but I graduated and there was a part that I was supposed to get for the summer but I was done. They only dispersed everything in halves, including loans. I never included summer on the application for the increase just for the fall/spring period. So now I am at university and I am looking to take summer classes at a cheaper school that can be taken as part of my major. And I was curious if any unreceived funds can be received should I re-enroll for summer classes at my previous school? With no conflict to my financial aid that is at my current school. I’m looking at paying out of pocket if I have to.

This loan was part of the calendar year before university. I receive pell and loans currently at university. Summer classes are $500 more per class and there is not enough loan amount to cover them. I have not applied for any summer aid at this university btw.

I don’t know if financial aid rules apply to summer semesters or if it’s based on year or semester. My financial aid with the university is based on fall/spring semesters. I don’t think I’m trying to do anything wrong here. It’s not my intention.

How about if you make an appointment in your financial aid office. Ask them what aid might be available to you for summer 2020.

You can’t receive loan money from 2018 summer now. That’s two years ago. Loans are given to students for the academic year of their FAFSA form. If you don’t use the loan at that time…you can’t use it in later years.

Is that what you are asking?

If you are in college now, you need to find out if summer 2020 is part of the 2019-2020 academic year…or the 2020-2021 academic year.

Have you already used the full federal direct loan allotment for 2019-2020? If so, you can’t get more direct loan money for summer if it’s part of the 2019-2020 academic year.

You might be able to get some Pell money.

@kelsmom ??

You will not be able to get any federal aid at your old school because you are no longer enrolled there as a degree seeking student; you can only get aid at the new school.

I meant 2019 sorry. Summer counts as fall-spring-summer in that order so summer would be based on the 2019-20 academic year. My financial aid package I believe stated fall/spring. And the FA department at my school said that taking summer classes would not hurt my aid for the next year. I have a small amount of loan aid available for summer but it’s not enough. So I technically have not used my available loans for the year. I’m short $1800 for summer classes whereas at a tech school I only need $1200 or so out of pocket and that’s paying for classes straight up. I cannot receive pell money for a different school I don’t believe and that’s including taking summer classes at one school only.

Please clarify…

  1. Were you done with the tech school in spring 2019?
  2. Have you been at the university the full 2019-2020 year?
  3. Are you currently receiving a Pell Grant at your new university?
  4. Are you planning to take this summer course at your current university?? That’s important. You must be a matriculated student to receive aid at that school.

I believe you are asking if you can use summer 2019 loan money from your tech school. The answer to that is no. You are no longer a student there.

If summer 2020 is included in your current school for the 2019-2020, then you need to use any remaining loan money from the 2019-2020 year to fund summer.

And you need to ask about Pell money.

If you are taking this summer class at a college where you are not a matriculated student…you can’t get aid at all.

Did you graduate with a bachelor’s degree?

Then you cannot get Pell Grant or undergraduate loans for a second degree I believe.

You might get a graduate loan.

  1. Yes. I graduated last spring.
  2. Just about, a couple of months to go. But I am enrolled for the full 2019-2020. 3.Yes. 4.No, unless I can get extra help. More on that.

I was hoping I could use loan money from my previous tech school to take cheaper summer classes there. I just found out here and from them that I cannot. I am only eligible for about $2300 at university and part-time will be $4000. Classes at university are three times the cost of a tech school and everything is counted by a credit hour. So because of more hours in summer classes, that’s another credit hour cost. It’s way too much. And the loan money I have already received that was left over has gone to living expenses (food, heat, etc) because my grandmother passed away, and I have more responsibilities now.

Pell is $1500 something and loan is $700 something.

I graduated tech with Associates. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s.

You cannot get need based financial aid to take courses at a different college than the one you are enrolled in to get your degree.

Why…why do you need to take summer courses? Perhaps getting a job would be a better idea.
