Very low GPA, what can I do?

I am currently an ECE pre-major, but in one semester my EGPA went from 2.6 to 2.2. I know I can retake the two classes I got D’s in because of the new rule, but I’m not sure if I want to continue with the major. ECE is the only major I know of that has a low GPA requirement of 2.7 because of its difficulty, so now I feel like I’m screwed out of any chance to change majors. What do you think I should do?

I have been through a similar situation twice now (2 different sons), so all I can do to help is tell you about our situations. I’ll begin by telling you to discuss your situation with your parents and your advisor. It will take a huge weight off your shoulders and they can help you formulate a plan.

Oldest son began at OSU in Computer Science & Engineering - it was apparent during the first semester that he was in over his head, but he struggled through and ended up with under 2.0 gpa. He managed to transfer into Mechanical Engineering (this was a few years ago), but things didn’t improve and needed to leave the school of engineering. He changed to an Undecided major and focused on completing Gen Eds to bring his gpa up.

Once his gpa was at an acceptable level, he applied to Fisher School of Business - the only specialization he qualified for was Real Estate, but at least he was in Fisher! He finally settled on a specialization in Logistics and Operations Management and that’s what his undergrad degree is in. He had good job offers upon graduation and worked for 2 years and felt like he wanted more. He needed to take a few extra math courses and then applied to the MBLE (Masters in Business Logistics Engineering) program, which is very selective. He was accepted and graduated last month - and his gpa was 3.57. Oh and he worked full time while in grad school full time.

Next son majored in Athletic Training and again after Freshman year ended up with under 2.0 gpa. I sat down with him and we went through the entire list of majors offered at OSU. We finally settled on Construction Systems Management and he was very happy and his gpa improved greatly! He will graduate in May and has just accepted a job. He loves what he’s doing!

So, moral of my story is that you may need to explore other majors and/or take some time to rebuild your gpa (by retaking some courses and taking Gen Eds). Your advisor may be able to figure out an avenue for you to remain in the college of Engineering. Your parents can help you explore other options .http://majors.osu.edu/search.aspx The Younkin Success Center is a free service at OSU and offers career counseling services - maybe talk to someone there. http://younkinsuccess.osu.edu/career-services/. Lots of people want you to succeed - but you need to take the first step - it will be worth it. Good luck!
