very very nervous, chances are low, what do you think?!

Hi!

I can't be the only one nearly shaking about the applications process, right? If I am that may have been influenced by the fact that all of my friends are applying early to college.. and my chances are pretty much nonexistant....

My grades are terrible but I can definitely pull them up! I have b's and a c in honors biology. (There's DEFINITELY enought time! I hope)! My grades fluctuate because of a complicated home situation, which sometimes makes it extremely hard to do homework and focus the next day (boarding school reason number one). I attend an independent school and most of the schools I'm applying to have heard about it... I don't know maybe haha.

I'm applying to Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, Choate, Groton, Emma Willard, Lake Forest Academy, Western Reserve, Cranbrook, Deerfield, St. Stephens, NMH, The Hills School, Cushing, and Cate.

I am in the 9th grade (freshman/prep)

Extra Curriculars:
Varsity Field hockey
Drama-- assistant director of fall play, lead role past musical and HOPEFULLY next (fingers crossed!)

instrumental-- woodwind ensemble, honorary string ensemble (my schedule screwed up :/), vocal ensemble, and if we HAD a band I would do trumpet like I did at my old school... I also am fairly familiar with percussion.. but I don't think it's anything to bring up haha! I also compose pieces for the vocal ensemble! When I was in the fifth grade I would waste HOURS composing piano, trumpet, and vocal arrangements.

Other art related things
3d animation-- I've taught classes on Autodesk Maya.. used it a couple times as well! XD.
airbrushing-- I have a small business modding controllers, building computers, and personalizing pretty much anything with airbrushing.. its pretty fun!
Language arts-- self taught Italian and Hebrew.. I hope to learn Russian, Korean, and French, as well!
I can make some pretty gruesome looking injuries with makeup!
Screenwriting-- working on 7 screenplays since 3rd grade!

Computer science-
SUPER PUMPED! Our robotics team just placed first in a regional competition, so we're moving on to the next rounds!
I can code in Java, c#, objective c, and learning Swift.. I've made some apps for my school and am helping them come up with a coding curriculum for a new class next year. I made them a website for drama, as well, but once I submitted it, the website was never posted :/ (I'm not the best with javascript haha)
I built an iPhone charger from some batteries, wire, and a car charger because I forgot mine.. I don't know kind of embarrassing when I remember the reason!
I occasionally take college courses from a local university, but the only one I'm proud of was when I was 12 I took logic :p.
On school's tech team
Starting to work on my associate's in software engineering
Built first computer when I was 9, first robotic arm when I was.. 11 maybe?

Student government- eight grade president. I'm kind of proud of that.. Only because it was my first year at the school!

Community service--
190+ hours
Volunteer at Animal Shelter, Runs/walks for cancer and drug awareness, etc

I've scheduled some interviews, and will call Choate tomorrow! I know some current Exeter students and alumni, only alumni from Andover, Choate, and THS... AAUUGHH some days I think "PSSHHT this will be easy! Next year I'll be walking along the path with my fellow Exonians! Go big red!" Then the next: "HOLY CHEEZUZ I WOULDN'T GET IN IF I TRIED!!!!!!"

What do you think? I know I have to work on grades DEFINITELY :). Any tips on how to stay focused? I don't want to describe what's going on in great detail, other than it's finally getting resolved after years, but it's still extremely hard to focus with it going on. This is the one year I know I have to be amazing, or how my field hockey coach reminded me: "Exeter speed." Seriously, any criticism or ideas or suggestions I am so grateful for! :)

advice? I’m literally freaking out haha. If anyone has study tips for the SSAT, study tips in general, or ANYTHING I will USE IT lol :)

Studying for the SSAT can be tedious and boring and blah.
Personally, I went to Sylvan Learning and got an SSAT tutor for the area I knew I would have the most trouble in. Compared to most private tutors, it’s relatively cheap and it’s a great way to hone in your skills before the test.

@HistoryGeek40 thank you so much!! I will look into that. I went on amazon and purchased some books… by some I mean 8… I will definitely look into that! How long did you study for?

When I took it the first time it seemed so easy… but then getting my scores I laughed because I felt so stupid haha.

Oh my Goodness, I just realized I never responded!
I felt really dumb when I got my November SSAT’s back (90% V, 80% R, 40% Q) but I now know what I need to work on. It’s hard, but with enough practice and studying, you’ll be successful!

@HistoryGeek40‌ thank you! Oh my gosh I am still freaking out. Just the usual: not smart enough, etc. BUT thats okay! I guess if it doesn’t work out, it wasn’t meant to be! If I don’t get into any of these schools, at least I will be prepared for college! Oh wow… Do you ever get really really nervous about applications?

@UIButton‌ Alllll the time. I was more worried about my first Trimester grades not being good enough, but I managed to pull up my struggling grades (History and math) I feel okay-ish now. SSAT math is my biggest worry now…

@I understand… I think I seriously screwed up my interview… my grades are not the best either. I mean… they’re ok but my school has an odd grading system so I have no idea how they’re going to see this. :(

If you do really well on the SSAT’s, I’d say you have a decent shot. Are there any other school’s you’re looking at?

Oh, psh, yeah, you are. I’m dumb.

@HistoryGeek40‌ lol no worries. I’ve accepted that I won’t be accepted lol. Well… I guess tonight I’ve accepted it… ask me in a couple days and I will have a TOTAlLY different answer :stuck_out_tongue: Im also worried about how I’m going to continue my classes from a local university… I’ll miss my professors so much :frowning: THAT IS IF I GET ACCEPTED…

I have a feeling that you will be getting a happy little slip of paper on M10. Just pull up your science grade, and maybe make an A or two, and you should be in really good shape, especially if your field hockey skills are strong enough to be a recruit :)

@HistoryGeek40‌ awww thanks  I hope so!!! You as well!! I don’t know about the a’s but I’ll try to do super well on the exams! I don’t know about my FH skills… They’re good enough for the 3rd best varsity team in state… but we’re a pretty tiny school… I guess we’ll see!!

Thank you!!! I hope to at least to get into ESA school… then whatever comes comes

@HistoryGeek40‌ oh crapples I just realized: How am I going to keep doing my college courses :(

@UIButton: That field hockey will DEFINITELY help you with a hook, per se. Be sure to mention that to your interviewers/on your application. And I was recently invited to apply to a Stanford Summer Program, you get to take college courses and get the credits. I say that if money isn’t an issue, you should talk to your parents about taking one of these over the summers. But remember: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch (which they will)

And there are INFINITE programs like Stanford’s; name a college and I’m sure they have a pre-collegiate program available.

@HistoryGeek40‌ Congrats!! I major in engineering at a local university-- It’s the only thing keeping me focused haha. I would love to go to one of the summer programs!!! I was invited to the Stanford one as well but I work every summer so I couldnt :(. I would love to though!!! I guess as long as I’m not considered a college dropout if I do go? Just s college “hold out?!” And hopefully they hatch :):). We will see!!! :):). Thank you so much!!

@HistoryGeek40‌ i just got a reply from one of the admissions people. I sent them an email about the interview and omg apparently I didn’t fail! Yay!!

Ahhh yay! What school was this for?

@HistoryGeek40‌ Exeter!! My Andover and choate ones went pretty well I think!!! At choate my interviewer was an engineering graduate so we talked a loooonngg time about that. How are your apps coming?
