Thanks in advance from an aunt who knows nothing about dance…
My nephew is an extremely talented dancer who would like to pursue contemporary dance in college. He’s a hard worker, a terrific kid, and he honestly lights up the stage when he dances. He is currently attending a school for performing arts.
While he is very intelligent, he has grades that are just passing due to a host of learning disabilities. I don’t expect his SAT/ACT scores will do him justice, either. You’d never know unless you saw his test scores, tho’ - he’s extremely knowledgeable, personable and engaging. He’s asked for my help on his college search and I’m at a loss as to how to guide him.
Are there college dance programs that will consider talent ahead of grades (despite grades)? Are there programs that don’t have gen ed requirements (or requirements that can be customized)? I’ve done the basic searches, including conservatory settings, but haven’t found anything that might meet his needs. He’s a NY resident, money is tight. I would be grateful for any direction you can provide.
Universities may care about his grades and test scores, but if you look at specifically a fine arts school( Alvin Ailey or Juilliard) the majority don’t ask for them or at least don’t put much weight on them.
Several of the conservatories do not put a premium on grades, especially for a talented boy. University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Boston Conservatory, Point Park in Pittsburgh, possibly Julliard, possibly Montclair State in NJ. Also look into Goucher in Baltimore, good dance program and I know two kids with serious learning disabilities who got in, and got scholarships. Also, tell his family not be too scared off by the prices. Many dance programs are very generous with scholarships for talented boys because they need more males. I know boys who got full rides to Temple (Boyer Conservatory) and Point Park. Also, Montclair State gives in-state tuition to all dance majors no matter where they are from
Agree with BK above. U Arts doesn’t look at grades until after they see you dance and neither does SUNY Purchase. Also check out Hartt and U Indiana. The Alvin Ailey certificate program does not look at grade because it’s not college. The Alvin Ailey/Fordham program looks at grades FIRST before you audition.
Try Shenandoah University. But I would also have him work on his disability and what support he will need… Colleges will help you if you know what support you need. Good Luck
