So I have a letter from the VA that pays for any UC’s tuition/fees but I also qualified for Cal Grant A (which partially covers tuition/fees). Does anyone know if I can somehow switch to Cal Grant B and take less money but have it go towards housing/books? Or, is it not possible to utilize both financial aid awards?
Note: My financial aid is not under the GI Bill, it’s based on a parent having more than 10% disability from the military.
call the veteran’s office at your college. they can probably answer this question as they also help the children of veterans deal with the maze of paperwork.
I think Cal Grant A and B may have slightly different criteria, but you can call the number on the pages for the CSAC. It sounds worth asking. I think if you did get B, then you could probably use the 1,470 for other items and the veterans for tuition the first year. After that you would still get the 1,470 for other costs and the Cal Grant tuition money would kick in to cover that, and you use use the VA funds to cover anything eligible left…
But looking at this faq, it may answer some questions,
http://registrar.ucsc.edu/faqs/students/veterans.html
A: The Department of Veterans Affairs requires UCSC to report any fee-specific financial aid awards veteran for which students are eligible. Because the Cal Grant will pay the student services fee and tuition, these fees will not be reported to the VA as billed to the student. The VA will pay the remaining mandatory fees not covered by Cal Grant (e.g., campus fees, student health insurance).
