Hi,
I am a current high school junior looking for summer veterinary internship opportunities in the Los Angeles area. I am also willing to go somewhere else in the country if they offer housing. I have been having a lot of trouble finding veterinary internships for high schoolers in my area. Do you have any suggestions?
I also would really like to shadow a veterinarian in their clinic, but I’m not really sure how to set up something like that.
My son found his paid internship by networking and didn’t get it until between his junior and senior year. They are few and far between for veterinary medicine. His unpaid came from taking a cover letter and resume to every veterinary clinic in the area. Luckily his hs had connections with the one that took him on. He worked the summer before his Sr. year and all his Sr. year there (unpaid but got his Veterinary Assistant Certification from it).
To get those just get dressed up nicely. Go to every place, ask if you can speak with the office manager and tell them what you are looking for. If they are not there leave the paperwork. THEN, don’t forget this step, follow up with an e-mail thanking them for their consideration that day, and if you have heard nothing follow up with a phone call. Finding one takes work! Start with your family veterinarian if you have one or a good friend’s veterinarian. Check with your hs if they have any connections with a local clinic.
