I want to know the reasons why some students want to stay away from a career in medicine. Can someone come up with deep down arguments that can be used to overcome parental pressure to become a premed?

-malpractice costs are cutting into the pay of doctors
-possibility of malpractice suits
-tons of schooling -> tons of debt
-doesn't interest you/science is not one of your strong points
-don't wanna be a doctor
-it's not the only career that makes a lot of money

a compromise could be that you'd major in what you want but do the pre-med pre-reqs anyway

Taking prerequisite courses is only part of the story. To be a successful pre-med one needs to be focussed on getting into med school 24x7. Anything less than such an effort won't be enough for pushy parents. That's the dilemma.

I know someone who majored in Econ but did the pre-reqs for med school, at the end of their college career they told their parents they'd take a year off before applying to their med schools and instead work. They have continued to use the same excuse for nearly 3 years now, my guess is that they're never going to do med school. It'll get to the point where they're so well promoted within their own career that they wont need it, and since they're making a salary and their own money their parents' wishes wont matter.
