Hello- my son is currently in the process of choosing schools. We are from Philly area and he wants to stay close. After visits etc. we have narrowed search down to Nova or SJU. He has always wanted Nova, yet we are concerned about culture, social scene etc. Have heard from many that Nova has very elitist, snobby student population and sometimes difficult to fit in. I understand that every school is what you make of it, yet want to set him up for success. In addition to a great education we want him to also have a fun college experience. Any thoughts on Nova culture, social scene etc?
Hi I’m a first year Villanova student. I am not from this area and never visited SJU nor do I know anything about their reputation. My experience at Villanova has shown me that there definetely are many people who are part of the elitist, snobby population. However, I have found that it is really only difficult to fit in with that group of snobby elitists. I found that I was able to find my group of friends through organizations with people that shared my interest (Club sports, Proffessional Societies, etc). Coming from the south, I saw I grew up in different culture than what is here and I was nervous about not being able to find a group, but by being social and interacting with everyone I met I was able to find a solid group of people. I think there is nothing to worry about concerning getting to know people as long as he is social.
In terms of the social scene, students and the university are always organizing events. I have found that there is stuff to do every weekend and most week nights. I have found no problem keeping myself busy.
Goodluck in making a choice!!
