D is looking at colleges with technical theater majors. She seems to be leaning towards BA programs as she may like to double major (digital media? political science?). No real test scores yet (she’s a sophomore) but 10th grade PSAT was 670v/590m and practice ACT composite was 31. GPA not strong, however (3.2 u/w;3.5 weighted) and planning for 4 or 5 AP classes.
So far have walked through some campuses (loved JMU but concerned about not-strong GPA; would prefer not to attend Longwood as it is so rural) but would like to learn about options to consider on initial college list.
Also, are there any day-long programs where high-school students can experience classes on campuses? Did read about one at VCU in April and wonder if other schools offer similar opportunities.
Hey I am in virginia too! I would check out Shenandoah University! Although it is a conservatory I am not sure about them having a BA. But maybe it might be worth it to look into. They also have Conservatory days where you can shadow someone in the major you are going into
VCU probably has the best known program for tech theater in the state. I know someone who went on to get a MFA from Yale after completing the VCU tech/lighting design program and is working in NYC. She would need to submit a portfolio for admittance to the BFA, but they also have a general theater studies BA.
Mary Washington University could be an academic safety/match depending on how things go with the GPA. You should also look at CNU and VTech. CNU has a beautiful performance space, but is getting more popular and thus harder to get into. George Mason is also a possibility - lots of opportunity with all the performances at the Center for the Arts. Good luck!
