<p>If there's one positive aspect to yesterday's shooting, it's that the alert system implemented at Virginia Tech after the bigger incident a couple of years ago worked as intended to keep students out of the way of potential harm:</p>
<p>I’m a student at VT currently, and although I do agree it is a good system, it still has a huge flaw:</p>
<p>The major thing that’s wrong with VT Alerts is that too many people are subscribed to it. Besides students, many alumni are subscribed once they leave; moreover, major and local news stations (like CNN) are also subscribed. This makes it extremely slow to get out to the students in actual danger.</p>
<p>In my situation, I didn’t get the initial 12:36 message on my phone until 1:01.</p>
<p>Interesting insight. It seems like a little database sorting could ensure current students were the first to bet notifications.</p>
