If my vision exceeds over -6.00, can I still be a naval officer through ROTC? I've been working really hard all this time to get into USNA and for other schools with NROTC and it would be disappointing to me to be turned down all because of something that is out of my control.

NROTC standards are different from USNA standards. My son needed a vision waiver from USNA and ultimately didn't receive one even with very high stats but is fully qualified for NROTC per Dodmerb. Only 30-35% of all mids at USNA can be there on a vision waiver I believe. When you add that to the already competative mix it makes it that much harder to gain admission. Check the NROTC website...there is a link to vision standards. Other academies (WP) have differing standards than Navy too. You might check those sites as well. Good luck!

My vision is over -6.00, and I was not given a waiver. When they talk about 30-35% with a vision waiver, I think they mean the DQ for being worse than 20/20, and aren't talking about beyond -6.00. I also got a NROTC scholarship, but cannot use it because my rotc waiver was denied. Vision standards are the same for both, except NROTC doesn't DQ for worse than 20/20. By all means apply, but don't get your hopes up. Someone on this site said they got a waiver for beyond -6.00, but he was like -6.25. You'll never know until you try. Also, I believe -6.00 is the limit for programs leading to a comission in the navy and marine corps, but you can go to OCS and comission with up to -8.00. Don't forget about PRK, either. You can get it before comissioning now, but don't do it now (wait til about 21). Make sure you talk to someone official before doing this, however.

What I was referring to was that at USNA my son needed a waiver and for NROTC he is fully qualified. We were told he would be fully qualified for WP too. There are some back links to several in the same situation from this fall. Best Wishes!
