Visit By the 14th Dalai Lama

Today is a big day at Miami University - the Dalai Lama will be on campus to give a lecture on Ethics in a Modern World at Millett Hall. The event has been sold out for some time, and will be simulcast around campus. Luckily, a friend of DS had an extra ticket to Millett so DS will get to see him in person. A once in a lifetime event.

The Dalai Lama is an impressive individual, somewhat akin to a modern day Gandhi. He’s person that will make a deep impression on many young college students. But, in the spirit of the [critical thinking](Critical thinking - Wikipedia), a skill the students at Miami should be developing, the Dalai Lama’s visit can also be an opportunity to discuss with them the [shortcomings of the pacifism advocated](http://www.tibetsun.com/opinions/2008/03/20/is-the-dalai-lamas-pacifist-stance-helping-or-hurting-the-tibetan-cause/) by [former leader of Tibet](http://www.dalailama.com/biography/a-brief-biography).

Many top institutions, like Miami, offer classes in an area of study called [game theory](<a href=“Miami University: Documents and Policies: General Bulletin”>Miami University: Documents and Policies: General Bulletin). With it roots in economics, game theory is making contributions in several other fields – providing a lens to discern strategies utilized in politics, war, and just about every other human (and [non-human](http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1200/is_4_166/ai_n6151880/)) interaction/conflict. One strategy in particular, [Tit for tat](Tit for tat | Psychology Wiki | Fandom), reveals the shortcomings of pacifism.

The [url=<a href=“http://www.interfaithstudies.org/ethics/dalailamamessage.html]Dalai”>http://www.interfaithstudies.org/ethics/dalailamamessage.html]Dalai Lama’s Golden Rule<a href=“%22What%20you%20wish%20to%20experience,%20provide%20for%20another%22,%20or%20more%20commonly” title=“treat others as you would like to be treated”>/url philosophy is only the ying to the yang of ‘defend yourself when others are mistreating you’.

D. has been very impressed by personality and presentation. Now she has one more passion (does she needs another one?). She is planning to explore buddism. Some monks are planning to visit her religious organization and lead meditation session. She is looking forward.

My 14 y/o DS and I drove down and attended the lecture thanks to DD getting us tickets. My son said His Holiness reminded him of a cross between Yoda and PeePaw (my dad). I love exposing my kids to these once in a lifetime experiences.
