Visit or Save?

My mom and I were just talking about the possibility of traveling to the East Coast next summer so I could look at colleges I'm interested in like Yale, Cornell, MIT, and Sarah Lawrence (I would definitely look at others too if I was able to go!). But I'd been thinking I would like to get a job (nanny?) next summer so I could buy a nice cello (iiiick mine cost $150, which is less than I paid for my bow), and/or save for college and possibly get a cell phone. I don't really want to have a job during the year unless I'm a rep for mark (an avon company) or something.

Obviously if I visit schools it won't take up my whole summer, but it will cost a lot (relative to what I/my family have), and I wouldn't want a whole (well, actually less than whole) summer of work to go toward just paying for that trip. In fact I had never really considered it a possibility until my mom brought it up. But it sounds like a lot of fun and very helpful in my final choice and possibly which ones I apply to as well.

So, what does everyone think about visit vs. save, if a long trip is involved? (I'm in Minnesota.) What about hotel rates? Car rentals? I haven't researched prices at all yet. Did you find visiting a campus essential in your college search?

Just wanted to generate another discussion ^_^

P.S. I apologize for my excessive use of parentheses...
