Visit

So last weekend the family did the very quick visit to Brown and Boston U.

I will try to pass along some stuff we learned. I had thought about doing a live trip report for this board, but didn’t see a place where I could post pics. I think that would be fun for the folks reading this.

Brown - Guess what it is an old school. Most of what we saw were really old buildings. The presentation was led first by two seniors in a Chapel. They talked about the very open curriculum. You don’t have to take Gen Eds there. Really the only requirement was 2 writing courses, but they could be in your field of study not just English. They have tons of concentrations. They said you could petition to make up your own concentration. Most kids take 4 classes per semester. They said about 30-35% of the juniors study abroad. They don’t really accept AP/IB credits. I could almost feel the air being let out of the room at that point. Tour - no nonsense guide. Told us the stories of campus. Something about not going through a gate but twice. We did not get to tour a dorm room. They don’t want to invade on someone’s privacy. It is in town, but does have a quad feel. D19 liked the no Gen Eds. She feels it is easier to double major. Not a rah rah visit. But not as serious as Carnegie Mellon.

Boston U. - The presentation was basically the same as the one they did when they came to our town last Spring. They took us through the stats and ECs of a applicant and if he would get in. Last Spring they gave us 3 examples. Pretty much your basic presentation led by a worker and a student. Tour - Speed walking. This guy seemed to be in a hurry. We did get to see a dorm room. Campus isn’t really a quad more like a couple of long streets. It is close to Fenway. Definitely in the city and a very large city.

Overall good trip. Got to see the Red Sox play the Mets. Traffic around Boston U Friday night was crazy. Partly because of the game. Both schools jumped into the top 3 for my D.

Hi! This is super-helpful: I just posted a question about school visits which I’m now in the midst of trying to figure out around my place. Appreciate the info - this year is going to be a marathon!

Hi @mimibee welcome to the forum. I’m the parent of a senior so we can see the finish line in the distance but there’s still some rough terrain ahead. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re behind, though. It’s great that you’re already thinking of this stuff and your kid should do great.

@ninakatarina Thank you for your kind words - there’s a ton to do and as I have a performing arts kid, much of it will have to be essentially “done” by this time next year…so I’m trying to stay one step ahead of the sheriff!
