Visited 16 colleges ..narrowed it down..Is this college list well rounded enough?

“Holy Cross, Bucknell”

In what world do either of these schools have athletic programs? These are schools in the Patriot League, which could be disbanded and even the students wouldn’t care.

You need to add Fordham to that list. Its more prestigious and better than Marist. Its just a wee notch below BC. Its in NYC and its an awesome school.

Butler is not the most generous with financial aid, though I am assuming that it is on the list due to the pharmacy option. Applying early there is the key to the money. If OP son does fo the pharmacy route instead, adter 2 years, it is grad school loans, so FA gets even more complicated.

i don’t know much personally about BC, but my friend who was applying last year said that they don’t like people who apply EA and you have a better chance Rd- just something to consider

First, thanks everyone for the all help and suggestions.

HappyMom and Mom2collegekids - I did run EFC based on last year taxes and it was it was zero…But our income changes every year as my husband owns his own business but I assume itsa going to be close to last year… that is way I said probably zero.
We can afford 20,000 or so a year because husbands business had done very well in the past allowing us to pay off just about the whole mortgage on our house… I am 39 years old and was going to refinance the house and/or use the line of credit to pay the 20,000 a year since we have the equity in the house. Also, my parents have mention if he gets in someplace he really wants to go… they would cover what we could not… The University of Richmond said that their FA package will only contain 5,000 a year in loans that rest would be grants etc… So, I thought that school could work out good. But, thanks for the links I am going to sit down and try and get some hard numbers.

Informative - Thanks for the great list… we have visted both Wake and Villanova and might add them back on to the list… Vtech has also come up in conversation. I think he just thought others had better stats and EC and he would not have a chance…

Mizzbee - Yes Butler was on the list because of Pharmacy and Computer Science and he is applying by Nov 1st.

Ghostbuster - I have mention Fordham from right from the start after was saw holy cross and BC and its about an hour from our house… but he just said don’t even want to look there…ugh… Even though Marist is not a top notch school it does have a great CS dept and a great relationship with IBM …they also offer a MS in CS or MBA in a 5 year program and with his AP credits he can take he would be starting with almost 30 credit and probably could graduate in 4 years with a Masters… I am not sure about everything… but that did sound like a pretty good choice.

Stats 21…visited UVA and really like it… but no chance as an OOS.

I do appreciate everyone’s input. I am hoping he will add two more low reach schools to his list as i still feel if he does not get in to his first couple of choice which are 50/50 at best… the tier schools do drop off quite a bit and would like him to have some better choices…
Thanks again…

Have you looked at Pitt? It’s a D1 school in an urban setting. They have both an excellent pharmacy school and a computer science program (not sure how ranked the CS department is, although I know a couple of folks who graduated from there and went on to work for major IT companies).

With an ACT score of 33, and a 4.2 WGPA and top 6% class ranking he stands a good chance of landing a full tuition scholarship which would leave you with a balance of about $10,000 per year for room/board/fees/incidentals.

D applied to several schools that have been discussed including BC EA. She was accepted and asked to be in their honors program. She was also accepted at Northwestern, UVA (OOS), UNC (OOS), Wake, Pepperdine (Deans Scholarship), and Trinity ($). It seems as though her requirements were similar to yours. She, too, wanted a D-1 school with TONS of school spirit. She ultimately selected UVa and is happy. We did not qualify for FA…have you considered Vanderbilt? Most students who like BC and UVA also find Vandy appealing. They have a few different merit-based scholarships too. Rice is also fairly generous; however, they don’t have quite the school spirit of BC. Someone mentioned SMU…both SMU and TCU are very generous with merit $. Lastly, Tulane has an honors program that’s by invitation (similar to BC). Also, they offer great merit scholarships.

Hope this helps.

Bucknell beat Kansas in the first round of the Division One 2005 NCAA basketball tournament and beat Arkansas in 2006 in the first round. Not shabby by any means. Holy Cross only narrowly lost to eventual FCS National Champion Villanova in the first round of the FCS football playoffs last year.

I guess I find it risky that a family with an EFC of 0 would even consider borrowing $80k. The payments might get scary if income stays lowish.

Very true…and certainly this student should apply to a few schools that would give full tuition scholarships for stats.

Is his major going to be comp sci? If he does pre-pharm, what will his major be?

*The University of Richmond said that their FA package will only contain 5,000 a year in loans that rest would be grants etc… *

Do they use CSS Profile?

Do they consider home equity? If so, how much?

I may have missed this…does the student want a school with Div I big sports to watch?
