visiting Rice-any suggestions?

Depends on the student, of course, but I personally tend to stick with people at my college for meals, and with people from other colleges during classes and in clubs. At parties and other social things, I mix with people from all of the colleges, which is fun. I doubt there is a rice student who doesn't have close friends in several colleges.

I was wondering the same thing about the colleges. Another question: Jenskate1 mentioned binge drinking as a problem. Is it very prevalent at Rice? I'm familiar with the Beer Bike Race and Valhalla, but how much drinking is there really among undergrads?

Going to your own dining room/servery for a meal is like eating at home, since there is a house/family kind of feel to it. That said, not all the dining rooms are open on the weekends, so many come over to the other dining rooms or serveries. Here's the schedule of hours of operation of the dining rooms http://salt.rice.edu/dining/index.php?topgroupid=1&groupid=5&subgroupid=32&contentid=143
Also, my s. says that there are certain foods that are known to be really good and are served on certain days (like bacon-wrapped scallops, for example) so the servery might be more crowded on those days as the word spreads about the good food. Lastly, if you live in one of the north Colleges and have classes close together around lunchtime nearer to the south colleges, you'll probably join oneof your friends there for lunch- its just easier.

My D says binge drinking is prevalent at every single college/university except the ones that are completely dry. She doesn't think
Rice is any worse than anyplace else.

would agree with momofwildchild - binge drinking is a problem at almost all colleges, not just rice.

and jym is right on - i eat at my own college for almost all weekday meals, but on weekends, i eat mostly at JYM's S's and momofwildchild's D's college since mine is closed (they have better food, but it's more like family at my own college).

How's the pilaf at Rice?

My D and boyfriend have started actually cooking at his college (Brown- Brown College at Rice, that is) in the Brown kitchen. They get a bottle of wine and make pasta, salad etc. on Saturday evenings.

Very funny, Yale...

Actually, we do have a lot of rice in our serveries. But for some reason (overcooked?) it's always very sticky. I went home for break and made rice one night. Someone complimented me on it and i was like..."see, aren't you glad you sent me to rice, so i could learn to cook rice?"
