can anyone give me some information on the vocal music program/scene at UNC? what genres you're able to study, what the ensembles are like, are there any a cappella groups, etc.?

There are numerous acapella groups at UNC, some for mixed voices and some for males or females only. Look at Tarpeggios, Clef Hangers, Walk Ons, Loreleis, just to name a few. Most of them require audition. There are also the Men’s and Women’s Glee Club and Ensembles, which you can take as a credit class. They also require auditions. Most of them are open to everyone, not just voice majors.

The Music Department offers four choral ensembles for credit: Carolina Choir (concert choir) and UNC Chamber Singers, both of which sing all classical music and are made up of a mix of majors and non-majors; and Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs, which sing a wide variety of repertoire - some classical and some lighter stuff. Carolina Choir sings with the UNC Symphony every year, Chamber Singers does a lot of early music. There are lots of a cappella groups on campus, with new ones forming every year. Many singers are in both the Music Department groups and the a cappella groups and it’s a friendly, not overly competitive scene. All ensembles are open to everybody, with auditions held either every year or every semester.
