Does anyone have first hand knowledge regarding the quality of the music department for vocal performance and the quality of their music theater department and productions? Daughter is accepted as vocal performance major and would like to be involved in music theater as well. Thanks!!

my d is not a music major, tho had peripheral involvement. all i can say is they have that new, incredible Katzen Art Center. why not call the music dept. and try to set up some phone time with someone there who knows?

i'm back, as i accidentally found a thread you must read! started by "mamalu" called AU inDC , MT....they are there talking about MT at AU and its merits and why it wasn't on the main MT list. hope this helps!

As a theater minor, I have some interaction in this area. While the reputation in the theater school world isn't very good, American's known for its politics not its acting, the musical theater/theater department is very helpful. If your daughter asks to be on the MOMMY list, a list updated daily by the Katzen staff with reduced ticket prices and auditions, she will be quickly introduced to the theater world at AU. I know a little over a month ago anyone who wanted to was brought by some of the staff to audition for the touring version of Spring Awakening. So to answer part of your question, the reputation isn't great. However, what everyones told me who goes to other acting schools is you're going to face a lot LESS competition going to a school like American than a NYU. It has its benefits. Good luck.
