Vocal performance/ U of Maryland and American University

Enjoyed my first posting yesterday. Now for a very specific question. Does anyone have knowledge about the quality of the Vocal Performance Major/or Minor at University of Maryland or American University? We visited both schools but didn't get specifics from either school.

Carmen Balthrop, who teaches VP at Maryland, is excellent. I met her over the summer at the InterHarmony Festival in San Francisco, and I was very impressed. I was playing violin in a chamber group with one of her students, with her as the coach, and even as a violinist I learned a lot! Her students were talented, well-rounded people. She has so much energy and experience; definitely consider taking a sample lesson with her.

American U is not a school that comes up very often within the music major forum. There are no BM offerings, which may well not be an issue given what you are looking for, and is known more for its musical theater and theater programs than for instrumental or vocal performance. There is a separate American U forum within the music theater forum.

[American University MT - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/american-university-mt/)

Thanks- I’ll look on The AU theater forum, although she is more interested in VP so that may be an issue in considering this school.
