Vocational Rehab Grant Money for LD & ADHD

I found out that kids with ADHD and Learning Disabilities can often qualify for grants from their home states’ Vocational Rehabilitation Departments. These programs also don’t seem to be well publicized.

My son has ADHD and some type of learning disability. He last had an IEP in 4th grade, but does have a documented disability, so he qualifies as a 504.

I found out pretty much by accident when poking around the internet that our state provides grants of $1200 a year for college students or high school graduates who are going on to any continuing education. This is in addition to any state or institutional financial aid provided.

Pretty much anyone with an IEP, 504, or documented disability will qualify after a meeting or two.

They will also pay for the diagnostic testing that is required every three years for my son to document his learning disability.

I also learned that most (perhaps all) other states have programs such as this. Vocational Rehab departments exist to make it so people with disabilities can function on their own and support themselves. Programs for college students are often under the radar, so you have to do some digging in many cases. The case workers in these departments are concentrating on people with far more serious physical and mental disabilites.

As far as I can tell, these programs are all administered at the state level, rather than Federal, so you’ll have to dig around in your own state government to find out how to get your child to qualify.

We’re in Florida. My daughter was told that VR would pay the full tuition to a state school and MIGHT pay out-of-state or private school tuition if the student was in a major not available at the state school. Anyone have any experience with the latter?

For those in Texas, call this number to get information about the grant:

We live in Georgia…my DS with Asperger’s has been getting funding from Voc-rehab. He goes to school at the U of Alabama. They only pay what they would pay for in state school…I am glad for what they give us!!
