I've noticed that on multiple occasions a couple of people on this forum have advised against choosing a vocational major, claiming that medical schools frown upon these areas of study since they are partial towards academic subjects.

I've recently become quite interested in a couple of majors, which would more or less fall under the category of vocational.

My question is, what is the source of your information? I'm just curious to see which medical schools hold this opinion or if it is a general consensus.

Thank you so much for your insightful posts, I really appreciate them.

Seriously…?! Did you even do a search? The VERY next thread on the board is about this. Go look there. AMCAS data and adcoms’ opinions as well as the mcat issue are all good reasons to question the wisdom of picking a vocational major.!

I did indeed do a search; I have gotten pretty obsessed with the subject as of late, since I plan to declare my major in two weeks. Unfortunately, the undergrad disciplines which caught my eye fall more or less under the vocational umbrella.

In fact I must have looked for every post containing the word “vocational”, on CC the past few weeks. I read through the very next thread, which really inspired me to post this one and on which I also asked this same question. Apumic, I saw that you were the first to respond to me, I thank you for that. The statistics are more than convincing and I completely follow the logic that the more academic pursuits, associated with scholastic rigor are looked upon more favorably.

However, in my fixation to this subject, I went as far as “cold” emailing some of the individuals directly involved in the admissions process, as well as the admissions advisors for John Hopkins, Washington, USFCA, UPenn etc. And while some of them only emailed me back with, “Applicants may major in any subject (including the ones you list as “vocational”) of their choice, as long as they complete the required coursework.” Or even. “Hi, Are you a student/alumni at John Hopkins?” Others gave me thorough responses which told me that majoring in something such as business would be perfectly fine, as long as you can explain why you chose to do so in the interview. I did however get the feeling; from UPenn the more liberal arts inclined the vocational major was the better.

All in all the trends in the AMCAS publication are evident, leading me to think that in order to not put anything to chance, it would be best to stay away from vocational types.
