Voice in College Essays?

<p>As I'm sure most of you are aware of various colleges have started putting up the various admissions essays that we're required to do. Looking and planning them, I was wondering what type of voice do colleges seem to prefer in essays? I realize that these essays are supposed to give a description of you that is much more than the numbers can tell. However, when I have a lot of "voice" in my writing, I often find that it isn't as sophisticated. Do colleges prefer an masterfully written essay or something that more accurately gives a sense of who you are as a person?</p>

<p>Use plain English and ask others to proofread proofread proofread for you. </p>

<p>Be yourself. Don’t aim for sophistication unless YOU are a sophisticated person. Big long words make reading difficult, not impressive. </p>

<p>Remember that scene from Pirates of the Carribean when Capt Barbosa says “I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request.”? DON’T write like that! “I don’t want to do that” is more effective.</p>
