Hi srw, maybe you could help me with a decision I’m currently making. I am a senior in high school and I am currently deciding between 2 options for studying undergraduate voice next year. The first is the Benjamin t rome school of music at catholic university, where I would study with either Sharon Christman or Fabiana Bravo, and the second is Barnard college, where I would study with Gail Archer. I guess I have to decide if I want to get a BA or a BM, but I’m also just wondering if you have an opinion on these teachers, you seem like you know what’s up in the opera world. Gail Archer taught at MSM for 15 years before she started teaching exclusively at Barnard and became chair of their music dept.
Any advice you could give me would be awesome, I’m terribly confused about the college search,

I have heard several excellent singers out of the Christman studios this year, well trained, very talented, well prepared…very impressive.

Personally, I would lean toward Barnard - fabulous undergraduate education with the possibility of a major other then music plus the ability to keep up your vocals - the best of both worlds. It gives you the time to decide if music is something you definitely want to pursue.

Sophie, I have sent you a PM

Another thing to ask when checking out teachers is if they have any plans to take a sabbatical during your years at the school, or, worse, are considering looking for a position elsewhere. It does happen and unless you are willing and able to relocate with the teacher, it can be devastating.

Wow, this is making my head spin, lol. I have a 14 year old, and we are just starting the process of researching colleges for vocal music major. Way more to it than other majors.

SRW - thanks for this! I just found this post! Not sure how I missed it! THANKS! Directing to my D for her review!
