Hi-I'm a senior right now, and I'm interested in applying for vocal performance/opera at universities, mostly.

Could anybody who would know please tell me what the vocal performance/opera programs are like at both SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Potsdam? Are they strong programs, and do undergraduates get a lot of opportunity to perform in operas and such?

If anybody could answer this for me, I'd be really, REALLY grateful. I mean, I've visited both of the schools' websites, but sometimes it's hard to find out exactly what I want to know.

Yes to both…I am a high school choral director and have alum at both schools, and have heard both schools choirs and opera company. Both are excellent and you will have loads of opportunities to perform. Do you have audition pieces ready? You should try to set up audition early in Jan or Feb for sure. The sooner the better if you are prepared. Also, I know that Fredonia is also looking at GPA and SAT. Have had very strong (i.e. All State) singers not get in because of grades. Good luck!

I will second everything that vahevala has said. Our daughter’s vocal coach is a Fredonia grad who teaches to put bread in the pantry when she is not performing. We’ve also been impressed with the Crane graduates we have known. Neither school is easy to get into. A close friend’s daughter – All-State vocalist and 4.0 student – who had had her heart set on Crane since middle school was denied admission last year, the latest in a long line of talented young singers who had a bad audition day. Make sure you have some good back-up schools.
