Is there a part of most applications that ask if you have done volunteer work before? Or do you add this in where they ask for your EC’s?
I’m asking because I have absolutely no volunteer work except for some service that I’ve done in school.

<p>volunteering is like a subcategory of EC's. No one has every subcategory of EC's. (I myself volunteer at the humane society for animals and I'm going to start volunteering to help combat adult iliteracy)</p>

<p>ok...volunteer is usually a EC or in a category of ec's. dont need to do it. i did couple hours and put it down but prolly had no efect on my app.</p>
<p>some schools do have seperate sections for that...it depends on the school. For example, jesuit universities might be more inclined to not only ask specifically about it but look at applications more favorably because of it.</p>

<p>At least thissshbananas is being honest..so many people at my school are doing loads of volunteering just to pad their college apps and acting all holy about it. I'm not saying you shouldn't volunteer, volunteering is great, it's just soooo many people are fake about it and just do it for themselves.</p>

<p>especially at hospitals. usually, they give u free meals. (I eat like $21 a day, because i get the best food)</p>
<p>My S has almost no community service. He goes to boarding school and did other things in the summers, and it just didn't happen. To be honest, at this point in his life it just isn't his thing. It may hurt him a little- yes, he focuses pretty much on himself- but at least he didn't do something against his nature just to enhance his application. He is an athlete and the demands of his sport and his academics are about all he can handle (along with his social life....:))</p>
<p>I'd rather someone not do community service and be open and frank that it's not their thing than to basically lie and do it to pad their application.</p>
<p>dat is a complete insult to say ppl do it just for college. I volunteered to help the community after they helped my family out through hard times</p>
<p>I didn't say you did. But there are plenty of people who do. Like people who play sports, people will do anything to get into an elite college. No one is making a personal attack. I myself volunteer, but not everyone is altruistic.</p>

for example, i work on a web site for a school and i consider it volunteer work...</p>

<p>ECs = recreational or educational activites done for self-enrichemnt
Volunteer = to benefit others</p>

They basically just considered me as free labor. I actually wanted to 'HELP PEOPLE' but they have so many college-bound volunteers that they just take advantage of us.</p>

but in my hospital, i just do homework while i wait for assignments.
i usually volunteer 4 hours. i do homework for 3 hours. Actually volunteer for half an hour (total.i work at nursing department. nothing to do.). Another half an hour for dinner.</p>
