This is probably an obvious question so I apologize but I want to be sure. I know you need shadowing so you know you like the medical environment but can volunteering be somewhere else? I've done Girl Scouts my whole life and was hoping to be a troop leader and help at council events but I don't know if that would be acceptable. Also could someone explain exactly what clinical experience is? I know it's important but I don't completely understand. Thank you so much and sorry for my ignorance!

Med school applicants tend to have a many different kinds of volunteer activities on their resumes–both medical and non-medical.

Being a Girl Scout leader would be listed under leadership experiences [non-medical], but not as a clinical experience. And leadership is a good EC to have on your application so if you enjoy Girl Scouting, by all means continue with it.

Clinical experience is anything that brings you into contact with actual patients–be that at a hospital, EMT/ambulance service, stand-alone clinic, nursing or group home.
