My husband and I work as self employed freelancers and do not receive W2 forms. Is this going to be a problem for FA offices? The college out son is applying to has emailed to ask for our W2 and I’m anxious about not having this form. Thank you in advance for your advice.
This should not be a problem. There are lots of people who have earned income but do not get W-2s.
Thank you!! We gave the college all the financial documents we have and hope they suffice. Anxious because this is for ED and could be holding up my son’s application
Usually financial aid documents hold up financial aid, not admissions. The exception would be for need aware colleges in some cases.
BUT if your tax returns were part of what you sent, it should be pretty clear that you are self employed freelancers. Many don’t have w-2 forms.
Most schools run the admissions office separate from FA. Not having all your documents in will hold up FA but usually will not hold up admissions notification. A few schools are ‘need aware’ but most are not. Of course, those schools (need blind) may not meet full need either.
Good luck.
This school is need aware so our financials (not good) would be a factor in admissions decision, I think. Deadline for the financial documents was Dec 1 and we did meet that deadline to submit all FA documents in IDOC. Was surprised to get an email asking for W2 when decisions could already be out mid December. crunch time!
If you are concerned, contact the financial aid office, and ask to speak to your financial aid officer. Explain that you are self employed freelancers.
We did email them back to explain and we are waiting to hear back. But yes… now considering (but slightly nervous about) giving them a call. Thank you so much for all your replies
The anxiety of applying ED to a need aware school is just insane for low income families. My son has an IB grade of 44 out of 45, a pretty strong application. He’s a varsity debater in MUN. The financials are a monkey wrench though. I hope the school does not automatically reject his application because of our family finances.
If he does not get accepted, you will have no way of knowing why. Just keep your fingers crossed that this all works out.
Just sharing an update. After we emailed an explanation as to why we can’t submit a W2, the school removed the W2 from the list of documents required from us. I guess we are all good, documents-wise. Thanks for you all your replies!
