Hi! The organization I received my scholarship from sent me W9 forms. Now, am I supposed to fill it out or are my parents? I don't work at all or make any kind of income. Thanks in advance!

It is your scholarship so you fill out the W-9 form, not your parents.

How big is the scholarship? Scholarship and grant amounts that exceed the cost of tuition, mandatory fees and required books and supplies are taxable income to the student. You do get a standard deduction of $6200 for 2014 before any taxable scholarships/grants + any other income would actually require tax to be paid. Note R&B costs don’t count as qualified education expenses.

Many accounting departments won’t cut any check unless there is a W9 on file. I’ve had fights with our department over this, and they insist they need the W9 even though the payment is not for earnings.

Just fill out the W9 (student’s name and info). You might get a 1099M next year, but it won’t change your taxes.
